Fast Plasma Drifts in the High Latitude Ionosphere

نویسندگان

چکیده

We have identified over 200 fast plasma drift events (>5 km/s) in the high-latitude ionosphere, as measured by electric field double probe on Dynamics Explorer-2 satellite during its 18 months lifetime from August 1981 to February 1983. Although these drifts can appear at all local time sectors, they are most common dawnside and pre-midnight sector. The generally occur between 64° 82° inv.lat. although sometimes below 55° sector, which case associated with a phenomenon often referred sub-auroral ion drifts. For increasing Auroral Electrojet index, their occurrence rate increases latitudinal locations move equatorward. observed last 0.1 60 s, corresponding (north-south) widths of 1–500 km along trajectory. observations show seasonal dependence such that faster tend dark (winter) hemisphere.

On the Reversal from “Sunward” to “Antisunward” Plasma Convection in the Dayside High Latitude Ionosphere

Preliminary observations of dayside high latitude ionospheric plasma convection with the Sondrestrom incoherent-scatter adar indicate that plasma can be observed to enter the polar cap region through rotational reversals at most local times between dawn and dusk and not just in a narrow region around noon. Assuming that rotational reversals are signatures of a solar wind-magnetosphere interacti...

Radar studies of mid-latitude ionospheric plasma drifts

We use incoherent scatter radar measurements from Millstone Hill and Saint Santin to study the midlatitude F region electrodynamic plasma drifts during geomagnetically quiet and active periods. We present initially a local time, season, and solar flux dependent analytical model of the quiet time zonal and meridional ExB drifts over these stations. We discuss, for the first time, the Saint Santi...

The response of the high-latitude ionosphere to IMF variations

The convection of plasma in the high-latitude ionosphere is strongly a2ected by the interplanetary magnetic 3eld (IMF) carried by the solar wind. From numerous statistical studies, it is known that the plasma circulation conforms to patterns that are characteristic of particular IMF states. Following a change in the IMF, the convection responds by recon3guring into a pattern that is more consis...

Mapping plasma structures in the high-latitude ionosphere using beacon satellite, incoherent scatter radar and ground-based magnetometer observations

In the autumn of the year 2000, four radio receivers capable of tracking various beacon satellites were set up along the southwestern coast of Greenland. They are used to reconstruct images of the ionospheric plasma density distribution via the tomographic method. In order to test and validate tomographic imaging under the highly variable conditions often prevailing in the high-latitude ionosph...

Transmission of the electric fields to the low latitude ionosphere in the magnetosphere-ionosphere current circuit

The solar wind energy is transmitted to low latitude ionosphere in a current circuit from a dynamo in the magnetosphere to the equatorial ionosphere via the polar ionosphere. During the substorm growth phase and storm main phase, the dawn-to-dusk convection electric field is intensified by the southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), driving the ionospheric DP2 currents composed of two-ce...
